"What questions of the universe do you wish me to answer now, Old Woman?! queried the old man. "First of all, I am not an Old Woman!", she spouted indignantly. He turned around quickly to see the voice came from a new form, one he had never seen before. How did "it" sound so clearly like her? Forming the words in it's programmed voice so perfectly that even the old woman thought she was hearing herself speak...

The old man looked and knocked the robot over , looked at it as it toppled over almost in slow motion. What else does she want of me now? The old woman, a scientist; the creator of the robot, stood up. Hardly containing her excitement. Finally, my replica of my husband has emotion!

The old man sat still, hearing the question, desiring to enjoy the moment of nothingness. He thought pensively as he looked down at his calloused hands. He had lived what seemed forever. What did he care of dust or of anything for the matter? Then a glimpse of a thought, a sweet face from the past came into mind...

His creation was designed to peer into the same blackness he perceived. He paused for another moment before answering the machine's question, "The burning, my boy, is all part of a cycle. It never stops. Things are not created or destroyed, merely changed." "Yes, I know, father," replied the robot calmly, "But what is the dust made of?" "Son, if you understand the cycle, then you must certainly understand its components." "I do father, but I am afraid of the dust." This last response stopped the conversation cold. Even Old Father was taken aback, jerked out of his usual semi-trance. Emotions were unheard of in any machine, even this one. "Why?" he stammered, "Why are you afraid?" The robot responded in it's same relaxed, neutral monotone, "The dust is things that once were and the dust is what all things will become. In the dust, I see death, and death frightens me."

Old Father started suddenly. "We should get going," he stared blankly passed the woman. "They may have returned." The robot stood as if triggered and left the old man. Old Father did not move. He never did.
