We've all had to look for jobs at one time or another, but it's especially daunting these days... Other than the usual "update the resume and monitor the job boards" thing, what creative techniques can you use to help execute a more successful job search?

Every field has organizations with periodic meetings and special events. Attending or joining those will allow you to meet people in your field and network that way.

Keep your resume in play and always talk to recruiters when they initiate contact. Instead of ignoring calls and e-mails because you are not looking at that time, discuss your current situation with the recruiter and what it would take for a new opportunity to be worth leaving for. The good recruiters will file that away and get back to you with jobs that fit your career aspirations as they come up, giving you a steady stream of better opportunities.

Social networks are critical these days and many believe its WHO you know, not just what you know. Cultivating and preserving contacts is generally a good idea, especially when hunting for new opportunities. The more people who know you, the more chances you have to learn about a job before its posted or widely communicated. Target people who work where you may want to work and learn about the company, industry, etc... Information is a resource and can help one's job hunt. Just because you are not working, does not mean you don't have "work" to do. Stay visible and connected.

Looking for paid work is the goal. But on days when you are not "working" volunteering and meeting people and getting word out that you are on the hunt can help your cause. Sitting at home sending resumes out and searching does not need to take a whole day, make it a routine to HUNT, then get out out and do something. Volunteering is great win win and many people have made new and great connections through various organizations. It feels good and the rewards may go beyond just the "work" aspect

While one's job hunt is of course top priority, if you know or learn of a job that may be a fit for someone else make that connection. Why? By helping others, they will help you, also helping an employer find a qualified candidate can only help you in most cases. It never hurts to expand one's network and the more people you know that are aware of your skills and talents, the more likely opportunities will surface. Pay it forward.

Using something like LinkedIn, search for employees and then research the hiring chain for that role within the company. Then you request a 30 min call to explore their company. You can socially establish yourself and understand the climate better. then you can reference them in an online submission. I also prefer to call the HR hiring person to discuss the position and then send resume. You are fresh on their minds.

Host or plan a networking event for a group you belong to (ideally a pre-existing professional association). Find out who the powerful invidivuals in your group are, using the web or linkedin.com, and personally invite them. The event will benefit everyone, and people won't know that you really planned it for your own benefit.

Most colleges and grad schools have online databases of alumni searchable by location and industry. Many also have a separate "networking" database of alumni who have offered to be contacted for mentorships or job opportunities.

Who you know, that 30 second elevator speech, requires face to face contact. Volunteer to organize or ATTEND those luncheons, fundraising events. Your ability to meet and greet leverages your marketability! Sooner or later, someone will ask... What do you do? Tell them you are looking for a position!

Let a company or business that you admire know how you feel about them by putting your name out there for ANY position that may become available. Funny how something could open up very soon.
