Do a red carpet. Instead of cheesy posed photos, do a paparazzi photo line at the red carpet and action shots at the dance. Decor Encourage people to recreate looks from movies/movie stars.

Everyone come dressed in powdered wigs and lots of frills. Have times where you play classical music and teach dances from that period.

Play music from various times - classical, baroque, and various 20th and 21st century periods/genres. Everyone can come dressed in outfits from their favorite historical period. Decorate with musical devices from the various times (instruments, wax cylinders, vinyl records, 8 tracks, cassettes, CDs, MP3 players).

Kids relate to music completely differently today than we did two decades ago or even a decade ago. Remember, the top ten jobs in 2018 haven't even been invented yet. Give the kids an opportunity to express their individual relationships with music. Pick an acceptable group of music, even today I'm sure that's a large amount of music - then give the kids access to a computer via web site to create their own mix of songs. Each kid choses 4 songs that best represents their high school experience and the order to play those songs in. Then set up an algorithm to sort out the repeats and match the order to same order from the kids' choices. Then let it rip.

Sit down 20 randomly chosen juniors and 20 randomly chosen seniors. Tell them you are NOT looking for a Prom theme. Tell them you are wondering what Prom means to each and every one of them. Not their parents, sisters, brothers, teachers or friends. But to them. Tell them any answers that look like they are suggesting a Prom Theme will be thrown out and another student will be randomly picked to fill their position.

Proms were the biggest event of a person's life in the 50's. I'd recommend an old school theme with poodle skirts and "bad boy" leather jackets.
