Studying traffic can help researchers identify established patterns and this data could be used to control traffic signals to better control grid flow. In the future, these cameras could help automated grid control systems installed in individual vehicles to automatically monitor and detour vehicles around problem areas.

Cameras in public locations have already helped solve many crimes. In traffic areas, cameras could document evidence of violations and crimes to be used in a civil or criminal case. Entities could request or purchase the data to do research and develop better products.

Who patronizes certain areas of the city. What vehicles use what routes. Counts of pedestrians and vehicles could be very helpful in determining good advertising location, retail spots and other data.

The next level for those little GPS things. Based on where I am now, all of that traffic flow information (both current and historical), and where I am going, which route should I take?

It would be really cool to see where people go, how fast, and how far... especially when on foot. At what distance will they no longer walk and choose to drive or get a ride?...

I would like to know how often people perform nice or courteous acts when given the opportunity. In other words, open the door for the person behind, help someone struggling to carry something, etc.

I would like to know who owns each camera and what are they doing with the data that they are capturing.

For me, the most critical information that would be immediately useful for me is to know exactly where all of the cameras in my area are. That includes banks, traffic cams, red light cams, convenience stores, etc... I would like to be able to track the proliferation of big brother in our society. I suspect the drastic increase in camera usage over time would be a telling statistic. RFID reader locations would be the next thing I would want to know...
